PROGRAMS

A wide array of nature and outdoor recreation experts come to Stackhouse Park to share their knowledge and love of Western Pennsylvania's wondrous natural resources and outdoor skills.

Sessions, camps, clinics fill the schedule at Stackhouse. Learn about birds of prey, conversation efforts, flora and fauna, hunting and hiking, and wilderness survival.

3rd Saturday, Monthly: Volunteer Morning, 9 - 11 a.m. The third Saturday of each month volunteers are encouraged to meet Park Ranger Jim Pasco to help with a variety of park projects.

Early Spring Wildflower Walk
Ranger Station

Join UPJ Professor, Bruce Robart, Ph.D on Sunday, May 11 at 2:00pm to discover the many unique flowers of the forest. These flowers bloom just briefly so bring your camera to capture the moment. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Spring Turkey Clinic with
Tom Hindman and the NWTF

The National Wildlife Turkey Federation (NWTF) and National Rifle Association (NRA) will feature Tom Hindman and Mary Jo  Casalena as the instructors of Stackhouse Park's Annual Spring Turkey Clinic.

Tom is a veteran turkey hunter and NWTF member and Mary Jo is a turkey biologist with the PA State Game Commission.

This clinic focuses on scouting and hunting tactics, ethics, safety, shooting and calling tips and much more.

The fee for the daylong session is $15 and covers all session textbooks and materials. Youths under 18 may attend for free.

Textbooks are given to each attendee and lunch is provided.

Summer Learning
Education Program
with Bruce Robart
Ranger Station

The Summer Education Program (SLEP) is a wonderful opportunity for 3rd through 6th graders to study wildlife while on their summer vacation from school.

Some of the topics that will be covered are: stream ecology, biology of birds, forensic science and orienteering.

The program is free, but space is limited to 20 students per day.

Each student or group of students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Most parents/guardians enjoy attending the different programs with their children.  There is always something new to learn.

If you enjoy exercising and being outdoors at the same time, then join Steve Budash and powerwalk through Stackhouse Park. Remember to wear comfy shoes.

White-tailed Deer Clinic with
Doug Meyer

Stackhouse Park along with the support of the NWTF is hosting its Annual White-Tailed Deer Clinic. NRA Certified Instructor, Doug Meyers will teach a comprehensive
approach to white-tailed deer hunting that ranges from novice to advanced tactics.  The cost is $10 per person. Youths under 18 years of age may attend for free. To register: Call Ranger Jim Pasco at 814-536-1674.

5K Race

This year, the Annual Membership Picnic, Jamboree and 5K Race will be held on the same day.

Registration for the 2nd Annual 5 K race begins at 9 a.m. with the race promptly starting at 10 a.m. The fee for this race is still being determined and all proceeds will benefit Stackhouse Park.

Stackhouse Member Picnic
and Jamboree

This year, the Annual Membership Picnic, Jamboree and 5K Race will be held on the same day.

The Annual Membership Picnic begins at 10 a.m.  Food and beverages are free to all current Stackhouse Park Members. Food and drinks will also be available at a cost to any non-member of Stackhouse Park. The jamboree will feature Dave DiStefano along with other musicians and bands. The jamboree begins at noon at Pavilion # 2. 

This is one of the last events of the summer, so bring the kids and enjoy one last outing before fall and winter arrive.

Mushroom Identification Walk with Jim Pasco
Ranger Station

Join Park Ranger, Jim Pasco to discover the array of mushrooms that live on the forest floor. NOTE -- this walk will only take place if the mushrooms are in bloom.

Oct. 25

12 - 4 p.m.

Fall Turkey Clinic with Tom Hindman & the National Wild Turkey Federation

Stackhouse Park will host its Annual Fall Turkey Clinic.  Tom Hindman will teach the clinic, which is designed to provide hunters with practical and advanced how-to information.

Winter
Saturdays

Slide and Ride

Snowfall turns the park into a winter playground for kids of all ages. An accumulation of snow means Saturday Slide and Ride. Glide the quarter-mile run, ride back up the hill on an ATV and slide again. All of this is complimented by hot chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers.
